A few days ago I was watching the news while James got his hair cut and I heard this being said:
"Canadian post-secondary students feel stressed, overwhelmed, lonely and some have even considered suicide in the past year, a new study released Monday suggested. ----- Almost 90 per cent of students said that they felt overwhelmed by all they had to do in the past year, while more than 50 per cent said they felt hopeless and 63 per cent said they felt very lonely. The report also painted a grim picture on the issue of suicide, with 9.5 per cent of students saying they had seriously considered taking their own lives in the past year, while 1.3 per cent said they had attempted suicide."This was a quote taken from City News Toronto and I have to say that this absolutely shocked me. I can't say that I have ever considered suicide (beyond the time my birth control was causing me to be cray cray and I wanted to swerve my car into traffic) mostly because even if I did consider it my fear of dying would likely drastically outweigh my fear of living.
Either way, this post was not meant to attack people who are considering taking their lives. My home town recently suffered the loss of a young soul (maybe 17) who took his own life and I wish this post was something he could have seen before he made the decision that living was no longer an option.
The above quote is something I've been struggling with pretty well my whole life. As an atheist (sorry) I haven't had something to fall back on and have faith in. When trouble would find me (as it often does) I'd curl up in a ball and listen to those around me who weren't aware of my religious choices (or lack thereof) say:
"Pray and God will listen. He will help you down the path you're meant to go down." or "I'll pray for you." (That one always makes me flinch a little).
This is all well and good, and I appreciate the sentiment, but it didn't help me get through the tough times.
Recently I've had some.... experiences. Spiritual ones. I'm not sure if you can believe in spirits but not believe in a deity.... but I do. I believe in energy and I believe in a world of our loved ones looking out for us. This is something I've always believed in, but recently my belief has changed from "mom, there's ghosts in my bedroom" to "spirits/energy are helping me go down the path I need to go".
I want YOU to know that regardless of what you're going through in this moment whatever it is, you're supposed to be going through it, otherwise it would not be happening.
It might be painful. It might be blissful. It might make you want the world to go away but I guarantee you that you're going to take something away from whatever you're experiencing. There's a reason you turned around in the middle of the street and went the other way. There's a reason you got pregnant at the time you did (or didn't). There's a reason you went through that breakup and there's a reason people treat you the way they do.
Don't give up. Listen to what your life is telling you. If you feel you need to make a change, make it. If you feel you need to go in a different direction, go. If you feel you're in the exact place you need to be, stay. If you feel like you need to say something, say it.
Life teaches us lessons and provides us with opportunities and our loved ones (be they here with us in the physical world or otherwise) are there to nudge you in the right direction. I'm sure that they are the little whispers in you're ear that you telling you what you need to do and where you need to go. Sometimes they will even present you with physical signs telling you what to do and where to go, you just have to be aware of them.
So whether you're going through a rough time or the best times of your life, know that there is something to take away from whats happening to you. Cry, scream, laugh, kick things but keep going because only you can recognize all the opportunities that are given to you <tweet this> and take full advantage of them.
I hope that if you're feeling down, or going through something in your life that is taking all your energy that you can see this message and realize that right now, you're supposed to be here, you're supposed to see this and you're supposed to feel my love, reaching out to you and telling you "Stand up, shoulders back and take this for what it is - an opportunity - to learn a lesson, make a change or feel how absolutely blessed you are".
Do you have a story you'd like to share about life leading you in the direction you're supposed to be? We'd love to hear it so others can be inspired by you. Trust me. There are people out there who need it.
